Former Heavyweight Champion Labels Tyson Fury ‘Overrated’ and Says ‘I’d Be Way Too Much for Him

Tyson Fury has been challenged by a fellow heavyweight contender, who insists he would “come out like a beast” if they ever shared the ring.

‘The Gypsy King’ is scheduled to face Anthony Joshua later this year, but has also hinted at wanting one more fight before that. His most recent bout was a unanimous decision win over Arslanbek Makhmudov in April, ending a 16-month layoff. Prior to that, Fury had not fought since losing a second points decision to Oleksandr Usyk.

Among the names considered for Fury’s comeback fight was Andy Ruiz Jr., who claims the Brit sent him a personal message before the Makhmudov fight was announced. Ruiz last fought in August 2024, boxing to a controversial draw with Jarrell Miller—a result many believed should have been a loss.

Still, Ruiz believes he can cause a major upset against someone like Fury. In an interview, he stated, “I’d love to fight him. Tyson Fury actually messaged me asking what I thought about fighting him, but everybody said it was too dangerous for him right now, so I’m pretty sure that’s why he picked Makhmudov.”

“If I fought [Fury], I think I’d be way too much. Although a lot of people are saying Fury would box me around, they haven’t seen me when I fight really good people. I come out like a beast, especially when I’m in shape.”

When asked which active fighter he considers the most overrated, Ruiz didn’t hold back. “I’m gonna say Tyson Fury because they hype him up so much, but to me, I don’t even think he’s a crazy fighter. Yes, he’s done a lot in the sport. But I feel like the only person he really beat up that was good was [Deontay] Wilder.”

While a fight between Fury and Ruiz seems unlikely in the immediate future, it could become a realistic matchup by 2027.
